BBC Radio 4 has today announced that Lauren Laverne will join the Woman’s Hour family, with the launch of Late Night Woman’s Hour as a regular programme once a month from Thursday 28 January.
The announcement comes as Woman’s Hour prepares to celebrate 70 years on air this October. Late Night Woman’s Hour premiered in August 2015 with an eight-part series presented by Lauren Laverne and Jane Garvey. The new monthly programme will be now available as an extended podcast online first on the last Thursday of the month (starting 28 January) and then broadcast the following day, Friday at 11pm on Radio 4. In addition, this February Woman’s Hour will also launch The Green Room, a pilot BBC taster video project aimed at younger women.
Late Night Woman’s Hour will complement the daily magazine programme, taking individual topics and giving them more time for an intimate, focused and in-depth conversation. In the first programme, Lauren and guests will discuss Purity, asking what it means for women in food, sex and religion. Other subjects to be discussed in the coming months will include Money, Anger, Fertility and Birth. Lauren Laverne is a familiar voice to Woman’s Hour listeners, first appearing as a Guest Editor on the programme in 2014. She returned to present the inaugural series of Late Night Woman’s Hour last summer.
Lauren Laverne says: “I’m so excited to be part of the Woman’s Hour team. Woman’s Hour has a wonderful history, but has also never felt more relevant. I've been a listener for years and hope that our late-night shows can continue the programme’s fearless, surprising and engaging line of inquiry, finding out more about women’s lives today.”
The Green Room is a video-led pilot aimed at a young female audience, set to run for six weeks initially. It will be published on BBC Taster in February, where audiences can try, rate and share new ideas from the BBC. The Green Room will explore the everyday lived experience of women and include short, shareable films and celebrity interviews; bespoke location pieces, for example on a BBC film set; and repackaged existing BBC content, which the audience may not know about but will be of interest to them. The Green Room will also use familiar BBC talent such as Lauren Laverne, Claudia Winkleman and Gemma Cairney.
Alice Feinstein, Woman’s Hour Editor says: “This October we’ll be marking our 70th anniversary and I’m immensely proud that as we approach that milestone Woman’s Hour continues to evolve. We still report on the issues that affect the lives of women often seldom discussed elsewhere, our daily programme is hugely popular with audiences, both male and female, and our podcast has allowed us to connect with even more listeners digitally.
"For 70 years Woman’s Hour has been at the cutting edge of women’s experience of the world and it’s clear that now, perhaps more than ever, that young women are engaged and interested these issues. I’m excited that the launch of Late Night Woman’s Hour with Lauren Laverne and The Green Room adds to our offer for our audience.”
Woman’s Hour broadcasts on BBC Radio 4 at 10am, Monday-Friday and on Saturday’s at 4pm. Plans for the 70th anniversary will be announced later in the year.
