New-look Radio 1 adds three-quarters of a million new listeners


BBC Radio 1 brought in nearly 750,000 new listeners last quarter following changes to its schedule, new data has revealed.

Figures published today by RAJAR show the network - which recently launched new programmes for presenters Clara Amfo and Annie Mac – added 737,000 listeners over the last quarter (5 April to 5 July), growing its audience to 10.44 million listeners per week - which rises to 11.34m when listeners aged 10 to 14 are included – compared to 9.7m last quarter and 10.8m last year. The station - which took its annual Big Weekend to Norwich with Taylor Swift and Foo Fighters in the quarter – posted a share of 6.4 per cent (6.4 per cent last quarter and 6.8 per cent last year).

The Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw also increased its weekly reach by 344,000 to 5.84 million, from 5.5m last quarter and 5.97m last year. Including all listeners aged 10+, the show now has a weekly audience of 6.31 million.

Helen Boaden, Director of BBC Radio, says: “It’s great to see young listeners recognising the passion and commitment Radio 1 has for their music and interests. The station plays a unique role in informing, educating and entertaining young listeners and these figures show that it remains at the top of its game. Radio is frequently underestimated so it’s wonderful to see the whole market growing this quarter.”

All BBC Radio’s weekly reach over the period was 48.18 million (34.87m last quarter and 35.23m last year) and a share of 45.5 per cent (54.4 per cent last quarter and 53.3 per cent last year).

Radio 2’s weekly audience was 15.14 million, from 15.09m last quarter and 15.5m last year, while the station’s share of listening was 17.6 per cent (18.1 per cent last quarter and 17.7 per cent last year). The Chris Evans Breakfast Show attracted 9.7 million listeners per week – compared to 9.46m last quarter and a record 9.91m last year.

Radio 3’s audience was 1.89 million (from 2.08m last quarter and 1.88m last year) and its share was 1.3 per cent (1.2 per cent last quarter and 1.0 per cent last year).

Radio 4 posted a weekly reach of 10.57 million during the quarter (10.89m last quarter and 10.53m last year) and a share of 11.7 per cent (12.8 per cent last quarter and 11.6 per cent last year). The Today programme has 6.68 million listeners each week, from 7.06m last quarter and 6.71m last year.

BBC Radio 5 live posted a reach of 5.32 million listeners (5.76m last quarter and 6.28m last year) and a share of 3.5 per cent (3.7 per cent last quarter and 4.1 per cent last year).

Among digital-only stations, Radio 1Xtra had a reach of 958,000 weekly listeners across the period (from 839,000 last quarter and 937,000 last year), Radio 6 Music drew 2.06 million listeners and is now the biggest digital-only station in the UK (from 2.06m last quarter and 1.89m last year), Radio 4 Extra attracted 1.95 million listeners per week (from a record 2.17m last quarter and 1.57m last year), Radio 5 live sports extra posted a record 1.63 million listeners (from 1.34m last quarter and 919,000 last year), and the Asian Network drew 607,000 listeners, reporting on a six-monthly basis, which is up on the quarter (562,000) and year (552,000).

The BBC World Service posted a weekly UK audience of 1.55 million (from 1.35m last quarter and 1.37m last year).

BBC Local/Regional radio reached 8.84 million listeners per week - from 8.82m last quarter and 8.99m last year.
