All this week the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show presenter Chris Evans has been exclusively announcing the line-up for this year’s BBC Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park taking place on Sunday 13 September in London.
Now in its fifth year, A Festival in a Day is one of the live music highlights of the BBC Music calendar, with some of the world’s finest artists playing again to the 50,000-strong crowd in the park and live on BBC Radio 2.
Jeff Smith Head of Music for Radio 2 and 6 Music, says: “It’s a complete honour to have so many spectacular performers joining us for Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park this year. Listeners, viewers and the audience there will hear classic rock and pop plus a range of musical treats from all reaches of the broad Radio 2 musical spectrum. I think it will be a wonderful experience for everyone.”
Presenter Chris Evans today announced that rock icon Rod Stewart is to play a one-time-only performance of some of his most popular but rarely performed hits at this year’s event.
With his singular voice, narrative songwriting and passionate live performances, Rod Stewart has built one of the most successful and enduring music careers of all time. Having recently passed his 50th anniversary as a recording artist, the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee continues to add new chapters to an incomparable career. His 28th solo studio album, 2013’s global smash Time, entered the UK Albums Chart at No. 1, setting a new British record for the longest gap between No.1 albums - and marking the end of his nearly 20-year hiatus from songwriting.
Rod Stewart said: “This show is going to be a one-time-only experience. I'm excited to do some of the fan favourites that I also love — in football terms, these are the impact players that often get left on the bench.”
Stewart intends to draw from some of his most acclaimed hits from throughout his legendary career including In A Broken Dream (1969), Gasoline Alley (1970), Losing You (1971), Angel (1972), The Killing of Georgie (1976), I Was Only Joking (1978), Passion (1980), Every Beat of My Heart (1986), Motown Song (1991), Tom Traubert’s Blues (1992). Word has it, he will be debuting a few new surprises from an upcoming release.
Set to join the spectacular line-up this summer is Bryan Adams, who has been rocking the UK for four decades. During the past year, the singer/songwriter has been on tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of his album Reckless which spawned six Top 10 singles, including a duet with the iconic Tina Turner. He has been inducted into Wembley's Square of Fame for performing 22 nights at the legendary venue and has just completed work on his 22nd album with famed ELO frontman, Jeff Lynne, producing. Adams is in concert somewhere in the world over 100 days of every year and another world tour is planned for 2016. This summer's only UK show will be at Hyde Park.
Bryan Adams said: "I went to the Hyde Park show last summer and saw Jeff Lynne (ELO) play and thought it was brilliant, so I'm looking forward to coming and being part of this one."
With their first live performance in a decade, Irish band The Corrs will also be stepping out onto the Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park stage this September. The siblings will be performing tracks from their most successful album, Talk On Corners, which was the highest selling album of 1998, as well as showcasing some of their newest music.
Andrea Corr said: “This will be the first time in 10 years we have performed live and we couldn’t be more excited. We’re in the process of making a new record so this feels like exactly the right time and place to do this, and we can’t wait to play some of our classics for Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park this summer.”
The line-up also includes legendary Italian producer, songwriter and DJ Giorgio Moroder, whose production credits include some of the world’s finest dance anthems such as Love To Love You Baby, I Feel Love, and Flashdance.
One of the UK’s most successful female pop vocalists of the last decade, Leona Lewis, will be performing her classics as well as songs from her new album. Plus, following a breathtaking live performance at St James’s Palace for the BBC Radio 2 500 Words final, the multi-platinum-selling and BRIT Award-winning Will Young will be returning to Radio 2 Hyde Park for the first time since 2011.
Also announced this week was English folk singer and songwriter Kate Rusby, who recently wowed audiences at the BBC Radio 2 Folks Awards at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff.
After a phenomenal year, supported by BBC Radio 2, one of the top new voices in UK soul music performing at this year’s festival is Shaun Escoffery, and completing the array of artists is the hottest new country acts, The Shires and Ward Thomas in a special collaboration.
Past performers at the BBC Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park include Jeff Lynne’s ELO, Smokey Robinson, Jessie J and Sir Tom Jones.
Coverage of the event, including full sets and performances from the day, will be available to watch on BBC Red Button, BBC iPlayer and the Radio 2 website, which will also feature exclusive backstage footage, acoustic sessions and interviews from the event.
